An aviation training platform that takes student pilots from first lesson to checkride: find instructors, plan the path, and keep every hour portable when life moves them.
The brief
Most student pilots never finish. Progress resets when they change cities, schools, or instructors, and the tools around training treat each lesson as an isolated appointment instead of a certificate journey.
AviPrep needed a product that felt like a school without the lock-in: find certified instructors nationwide, see cost and timeline before the first lesson, and keep hours, milestones, and recaps tied to the student, not the school.
Approach
I owned product design and frontend end to end: research and flows, landing pages, interaction design, and a reusable UI system in React and TypeScript that could grow with new surfaces (DPE finder, cost calculator, lesson recaps, training record) without restarting the visual language each time.
Hero and onboarding had one job: make the path to certificate obvious. Instructor search, DPE lookup, and “Get Started” sit in a hierarchy that mirrors how students actually decide.
Components and patterns were built to stretch across marketing and product surfaces so new features (path planner, AI ground-lesson recaps, ADS-B flight summaries) landed in the same system.
Dark, calm UI with precise type and map-led visuals. Aviation students need confidence more than novelty; the interface stays out of the way of the decision.
The work
Key surfaces I designed and built include the marketing site and core product flows: instructor discovery, personalized training path and cost estimates, Designated Pilot Examiner lookup, lesson recaps with ACS-tagged takeaways, and a training record that travels with the student across CFIs and cities.
Landing & conversion: structured the homepage around the certificate journey (profile, book, fly) so first-time visitors understand the product before they hit a form.
Path & cost clarity: turned opaque flight-school pricing into a planner students can run themselves: goal, aircraft, pace, estimated total, and months to checkride.
After every lesson: ground lessons become AI recaps; flights surface as ADS-B track summaries so progress is visible, not buried in a binder.
Outcome
AviPrep is live at aviprep.net. The redesign of user flows, landing pages, and the UI system lifted conversion by 25%, while giving the product a foundation that scales past a single marketing page.
